The Student Motorsport (SMo) Competition—part of the BRSCC Nankang Tyre CityCar Cup Championship—makes its highly anticipated first visit of the season to the Home of British Motorsport on June 13th and 14th to tackle the iconic 1.64-mile Silverstone National circuit.
Marking only the third time the grid has raced on this specific configuration since the Competition’s inception, the weekend presents an intense challenge. Teams will face the multi-race group format first trialled at the venue last season, where the 18-car field is split into distinct groupings following Saturday’s crucial qualifying session to contest two rounds over three action-packed races.
The Battle for National Circuit Supremacy
Historically, the National circuit rewards precision, and two current standouts know exactly what it takes to win here. Team Northbrook Racing’s (TNR) Jack Wheeler and Boston College Racing’s (BCR) Andrew Dyer both boast two class victories apiece on this layout.
Wheeler’s wins came during a dominant, near-perfect weekend in 2024 while driving for East Surrey College, where he also claimed pole position. Now embedded within Emma Norton’s triple title-winning TNR squad, Wheeler—who holds the quickest SMo lap record for a current Competition driver around the National loop with a blisteringly fast 1:19.001—will look to repeat that form. Conversely, Dyer took his pair of victories during the 2025 format trials, in a season that saw Lee Crisp’s BCR squad secure the class title and Dyer finish third in the Competition standings.
Surprisingly, TNR’s current championship leader, Richard Jepp, has never stood on the top step of the podium on the National circuit, despite holding five class victories on Silverstone’s International layout. Given Jepp’s stellar 2026 form, correcting this omission will be at the top of TNR’s agenda.
Grid Expansion: Egwuagu Joins City College Norwich
While the grid remains largely settled following May’s dramatic rounds at Snetterton, a high-profile debutant will inject fresh excitement into the paddock. Leon Wilde’s City College Norwich (CCN) Motorsport squad has expanded back to a two-car operation for Silverstone, welcoming former Next Racing Generation pilot Isaiah Egwuagu alongside regular driver Sean Feehan.
Egwuagu brings over a decade of racing pedigree, spanning a triple-championship club karting career to testing electric kart prototypes across Europe and competing in the 2025 Monoposto Championship. For Egwuaga, the move is a long-awaited intersection of competitive drive and academic support.
“I’ve filled out Driver Interest forms for at least three of the four years the Competition has been running!” Egwuagu revealed. “Budget constraints kept it at bay, but now I’m on board for a limited 2026 campaign with an eye toward a full season next year. As a graduate myself, I know how vital practical foundations are. To support this live learning environment is incredibly exciting.”
CCN Team Principal Leon Wilde echoed the enthusiasm, noting that Egwuaga instantly impressed during a recent Snetterton test day. Wilde also extended his gratitude to sponsor Fleet Livery Solutions for ensuring the newly expanded fleet looks unforgettable on track. Meanwhile, teammate Sean Feehan will be aiming for a bounce-back, progressive weekend after technical gremlins cut his Snetterton weekend short.
The Real-World Return: Inside the Paddock
As the 2026 season approaches its halfway mark, the tangible professional dividends of the project are coming to the forefront. A major three-part case study focusing on the “returns and rewards” of the series will launch over the coming weeks, kickstarting with insights from TNR’s Emma Norton on how trackside experience translates directly into industry career pathways.
“Our students want to be involved, and the work they do here enables them to go to other teams with genuine, verifiable experience,” Norton highlighted. “Whether that leads to short-term, part-time, or full-time employment, they graduate as industry-ready professionals.”
That readiness is tested constantly through real-time adversity. From managing accident damage and mechanical failures to executing rapid setup changes, the students are actively compiling evidence for the end-of-season Student Motorsport Awards, a part of the prestigious BRSCC Awards, with key categories such as Commercial Activity, Race Car Build, and Sustainability. Organisers will be actively monitoring paddock activities throughout the Silverstone weekend to evaluate teams on these criteria.
Looking Ahead to 2027
The growth of the paddock has also sparked early infrastructure upgrades. Student Motorsport Founder and Organiser John Paul ‘JP’ Latham expressed his gratitude to the BRSCC for their continued guidance, while highlighting a new partnership with Tuff-Tile, whose premium flooring and lighting have transformed the series’ Media Awning.
With the grid expanding rapidly, Latham confirmed that groundwork for the 2027 season is already in motion.
“Even before reaching the halfway point of 2026, we are actively planning for an even larger, more diverse grid in 2027,” Latham stated. “We encourage interested schools, colleges, universities, UTCs or NEET training organisations to reach out via our website or visit us in the paddock. Furthermore, we will be showcasing a Competition car and presenting the series’ educational framework, alongside some of our teams, at the BRSCC’s ‘Driven by Racing’ event at Silverstone on November 14th and 15th, and we welcome meetings with prospective teams there.”
With a unique race format, a hungry crop of returning champions, a decorated debutant entering the fray and the bonus of a visit to the paddock by Laser Tools with MB Motorsport Race Engineer Craig Porley, the Silverstone National circuit is primed to deliver one of the most unpredictable weekends of the season.
